13 date ideas for New Year’s Eve
It’s the season for sticky sweaters, cheesy romance comedies, and holiday shopping stress, which means the New Year is just around the corner. And while you might have thought that Christmas, with its festive role play and endless stash of cookies, was the most romantic party to boo about, I’m here to tell you it’s New Years Eve.
Between chic cuts, endless champagne and literal fireworks, it’s like the holidays are all about getting fucked. And for my part, I think you need to capitalize on that, especially after everything we’ve been through (see: all of 2020 and most of 2021).
So grab your partner (and your mask, please!)
Cozy nights indoors, adorable evenings and everything in between, there really is something for everyone. And uh, if you don’t want to invite someone out, get your best friend! Who knows, maybe it’s the When Harry meets Sally moment that you expected.
1. Splurge on an expensive party or dinner.
No matter where you live, there’s a good chance that some place will have a glamorous night out that you’ve been considering going to year after year. With an open bar, buffet, and skyline view, you probably go there almost every year, but you don’t end up because, hello, it costs more than your rent. Going to one (and only one) of those super expensive New Years parties or those fancy places with a prix fixe menu is kind of a rite of passage. Just make sure you get tickets or make reservations the second you read this, as it can be more difficult to get to than a candlelit restaurant on Valentine’s Day.
2. Or put on all your clothes and don’t go anywhere.
If you’ve been to one of those pricey New Years Eve parties and find that they’re absolutely not worth it, that doesn’t mean you still can’t put on your sequined dress. and those 2022 glasses. Pull out your faux heels and heels and clip around the house while taking selfies and ordering. The best part is you don’t have to wait forever for an Uber to come home for that special sex after midnight since you’re literally already there.
3. Plan a party together.
Getting a dinner reservation at any semi-decent place on New Years Eve is basically a myth, so why not skip all that and invite your friends over for an elegant dinner? Go retro with it and serve up a fondue or cook up a special dish you’ve fallen in love with on TikTok.
If you don’t feel like making an entire dinner or hosting a potluck, go straight to alcohol by hosting a wine tasting. Have all of your guests bring a bottle of wine, cover all the labels, and have everyone taste each bottle together to find their favorites. Not only will this mean that you and your SO will get completely drunk on wine, but you will pass many less money than you would at a party.
4. Go on vacation or spontaneous vacation.
Chances are, you’ll have a few extra days off during the holidays, and if not, it’s time to use those sick days. So why not go to a fabulous place together? Whether you get room service in a sexy hotel or a countdown to midnight in a tropical location, a romantic trip is sort of the perfect date for New Years Eve.
Keep in mind that you don’t have to fly anywhere or travel across the country for a change of scenery. Chances are, there’s a fancy resort or Airbnb nearby calling you. Play tourist in your own town and avoid all the travel drama by staying in a local NYE location.
Why not end 2021 doing something right? Volunteer at a soup kitchen, buy meals for the less fortunate, or head to the local animal shelter to walk puppies or cuddle kittens. Maybe you will leave with a new furry family member! But even if it doesn’t, spending time helping others will set the stage for a New Year filled with gratitude and generosity.
6. Snuggle up for a movie marathon.
Fluffy blankets? Lots of popcorn? Play football in front of the fire? Check, check, check. Movie marathons are the ultimate New Years Eve date, and there are so many ways to personalize it to suit your relationship. Watch all those holiday classics you haven’t seen yet this year or prepare some steamy movies that will rock you dry on the couch. If you can’t land on a genre, just go back and forth selecting the movie so that each has a chance to show the other a movie you like.
7. Visit parents.
Listen to me. There is never a great time to meet or relax with your (future) in-laws, but New Years Eve is definitely better than a laid back weekend or a more formal vacation. You don’t have to worry about someone spoiling a religious tradition, and there’s a good chance all the champagne will make managing small discussions easier. Plus, you’ll score important points for clearing your “busy schedule” to spend time with “rents” when in reality it’s just an excuse to eat their food, drink their booze and cuddle with your honey and the family dog.
9. Host a game night.
Game nights and NYE are about as classic as it gets, and honestly, it holds true. Grab a whole bunch of board games, snacks, and booze, and count down to midnight. You can make one while inviting friends or just keep it both. If you prefer the latter, that means you can turn up the heat and play sexier games that will make you want that kiss at 12.
8. Spend a naked night.
Yes, as the name suggests, it’s a date night where instead of dressing up, you dress very low. Spend your New Years Eve at home watching movies, playing games, and drinking all the champagne while rocking your birthday costumes. You could say it’s symbolic of getting naked and really enjoying yourself and what the last year has brought … or you can just use it as an excuse to have lots of sex and laugh while wearing hats. party and nothing else.
10. Go on a dinner boat cruise.
No, it’s not just for retirees. Dinner boat cruises a) give you an excuse to dress up, b) won’t be as crowded as a block party, and c) usually have open bars. On their own, they’re super cheesy, but on New Years Eve they’re pretty awesome.
11. Watch Christmas lights or fireworks.
New Years Eve is pretty much the end of the road for Christmas lights, which means now is the time to take a romantic walk (or drive) to see the best holiday exhibits in your area. If you’ve already seen all that your city has to offer, stock up on the sparkle by setting up a great spot to watch the fireworks. Pro tip: Parking lots usually offer phenomenal views and you can sit in your car with the heat blowing. Find a large one that faces the display and bring plenty of snacks.
12. Host a fast food feast.
Order your favorite meals at any nearby fast food outlets for an inexpensive but delicious buffet. Or if you still want to * go * somewhere, get dressed and hit each spot one by one, taking small bites from each. There’s no better photoshoot than wearing a glitzy dress in front of Taco Bell, so why not ring in the New Year with a whole bunch of likes?
13. Preparation of meals.
Set aside a time to have a meal prep date. On its own, grilling chicken and roasting vegetables might not sound very romantic, but cooking together is a great bonding experience. Plus, preparing meals while drinking wine and eating pizza with someone sexy by your side will make the farewell to 2021 a bit more manageable.
