Darkest Dungeon 2, the sequel to Red Hook Studio Darkest dungeon, is now in Early Access and brings a distinct experience from the first game. In this sequel, players will abandon the hamlet and progress through the world on a cart. While the fight retains many of its unique characteristics, fans of the first Darkest Dungeon should prepare for a unique new game.
The first one Darkest Dungeon featured a hamlet that could be improved over the course of the game. To do this, players could combine the different characters into groups of four to face the different dungeons. As players conquered the dungeons, they would amass various resources that could be used to strengthen the characters and the hamlet, and prepare them for more difficult challenges.
In Darkest Dungeon 2, exploration of hamlets and dungeons has been abandoned, and a system similar to Kill the arrow has been implemented. Instead, players will ride a cart through a region and choose between route options leading to various types of nodes. At the end of a region, players will find an inn that serves as a base for characters to regroup.
What’s new in Darkest Dungeon 2
Darkest Dungeon 2The new game cycle is about traveling from hostel to hostel. Here the wagon and the party can be upgraded, items can be purchased, and preparations for the next trip can be made. Upon leaving the inn, players must choose a region to cross. This will mainly define what type of enemies will be fought.
Darkest Dungeon 2 Also features a new roguelite progression system that works through Hope. As players progress through the game, they will acquire this “currency” in different ways. When a race ends, whether it’s finishing, losing all party members, or dropping out, the game will reward Hope based on performance. This hope will improve the profile. As players gain new profile levels in Darkest Dungeon 2, new characters and items will be unlocked for subsequent executions.
Crossing a region consists of choosing between branching paths, which continue to branch off on the road. Therefore, selecting a path at the start of a region can lock players in or out of other downstream paths. Each road leads to a node. These vary widely and can encompass battle scenarios, special vendors, or even ways for characters to acquire new abilities.
Unlike the first game, Darkest Dungeon 2The members of the group are chosen and defined at the very beginning. The only way to change party lineup in mid-game would be to reach the inn after killing a character. However, this alternate party member is chosen at random from the pool of characters that players have unlocked. To acquire all the capacities of character in Darkest Dungeon 2, the individual scenarios of the characters must be unlocked at special nodes.
The fight has also undergone quite a few changes, the most important of which is the lack of precision. Players and enemies will always strike their attacks unless status conditions are imposed. The two most common that allow failures will be a buff that gives 50% chance to dodge and a debuff that gives 50% chance to fail.
Darkest Dungeon 2 also introduced a relationship system in which characters gain or lose relationships with each other as the game progresses. This can have positive or negative effects depending on the nature of the relationship. As stress increases, negative relationships become more likely, which could lead to harmful rivalries within the group.
The relational system is now also closely linked to the mental health system. When the characters lose their sanity in Darkest Dungeon 2, they will undergo a Meltdown and their HP will drop to around 10%. In addition, they will also suffer penalties for their relationships with other characters. Any positive affinity will be eliminated and any negative relationship will be exacerbated.
Darkest Dungeon 2 tips and tricks
Plan ahead: Preparation and planning are always crucial in Darkest Dungeon 2. As players learn what types of enemies they will encounter in each region, they can take steps to prevent, for example, the status effects that these enemies tend to impose. The inn can often offer a variety of items that help players cope with these conditions or even provide a resistance buff until the next character boarding.
Don’t avoid the fight: While it can often seem attractive to avoid a fight, it is very important not to. The first reason is to prevent disgust. Having high hatred makes the game more difficult and players should look for fights that reduce it. The other reason is that the rewards are important for improving the characters in Darkest Dungeon 2. Either by obtaining Relics or Mastery Points to enhance their abilities, players must strive to strengthen the group to face the greater challenges that lie ahead.
Don’t overlook relationships: Making an effort to develop good relations between the party can be very beneficial. Not only does this avoid the hefty penalties of having bad relationships, but it can also be very useful in combat and out of combat, as players can heal HP or stress for free and even perform combos together. One way to reduce stress and foster good relationships is to listen to the characters before choosing a path, as a small balloon above their head will indicate which route they prefer.
Be aggressive: Although utility and healing can be very appealing in Darkest Dungeon 2, players should consider an aggressive style of play. Road encounters will give players a total of five rounds to complete the fight, or it will simply end, without any rewards. Playing aggressively has never been a bad tactic in the past Darkest Dungeon However, in the sequel it seems to offer more value than the other styles of play.
Enjoy the wagon: As soon as players embark on Darkest Dungeon 2 they should aim to destroy all objects on the road as they can often contain objects. In the Wagon, characters will heal over time and continue to interact with each other as it moves. Depending on their stress and the amount of Hatred, these interactions can have positive or negative results.
Manage character stress: The plague healer and the man-at-arms can be very effective stress healers. By improving their prevention and strengthening abilities, will provide stress healing to the whole group in Darkest Dungeon 2. Players can also use combat items such as Laudanum to heal stress. If characters need an emergency HP healing instead, players can cause them to jump their towers with low health to gain health in exchange for stress damage.
Use the objects: Players will often need to destroy items to gain space. While it may seem like a mess, each item destroyed will give some hope which will help in future races. That being said, players should use combat and inn items as much as possible. Inn items provide buffs that last the entire region and combat items in Darkest Dungeon 2 can be used as free action in combat to provide an edge to keep the party as healthy and stress free as possible.
Manage the flame: The brighter the flame, the more combat buffs the party will have. The reverse is also true, which is why running out of flame can lead to unexpected fights against very powerful and enhanced enemies. The more Loathing players have, the faster the light will go out. So players can take advantage of a living flame to seek out fights and reduce disgust, which will reduce flame degradation.
