Like the Dark Souls series, Elden Ring has several online multiplayer elements. You’ll often see ghostly images of other Tarnishes running around The Lands Between, and some will leave helpful (or useless) messages for players to guide them on their journeys. You can also summon players to help you with particularly difficult boss battles, or you can invade another player’s game to become a boss yourself.
Since Elden Ring is hard enough, FromSoftware uses Easy Anti-Cheat to keep everyone on the same playing field. You may notice the Easy Anti-Cheat initialization screen each time you start Elden Ring is the main reason why it takes much longer to get back into your save file than other games.
For some unfortunate players, it could take even longer. If Easy Anti-Cheat detects a problem, it will display the following message: “Inappropriate activity detected. Unable to start in online mode.” You can still play Elden Ring, but all multiplayer features will be disabled in offline mode. This means no summoning other players for help, no messages, and no PvP (which might be a plus for some of you).
A Reddit user found the post a little odd. Easy Anti-Cheat doesn’t really get into the “inappropriate behavior” it accuses the player of performing, so unless you’re actually using mods or hacks, you might be a bit confused as to what happens.
Twinfinite has a number of helpful suggestions on what to do if the Elden Ring anti-cheat software starts acting up. The first and most obvious remedy is to restart Elden Ring, Steam, and your entire PC. If you still receive this error message, go to Steam to verify the game files and repair them if necessary.
You may also need to repair Easy Anti-Cheat files. To do this, right click on Elden Ring in your library, select “Properties”, then “Local Files”. Next, locate the Easy Anti-Cheat folder and double-click “EasyAntiCheat_Setup”. From there, click on “Elden Ring”, then on “Repair Service”. Also, if you are using a VPN, you may want to disable it to play Elden Ring.
There are a few mods that shouldn’t trigger Easy Anti-Cheat, including this one that skips Bandai Namco’s blinding splash screen.
