News of a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie has been out for a while now, and it always made sense that we would get more Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.
Even before Sonic The Hedgehog 2 hit theaters, we knew that a Knuckles spinoff series featuring voice work by Idris Elba had been confirmed for Paramount Plus. Think of the show as Sonic 2’s version of The Suicide Squad’s Peacemaker spin-off.
But now we have a release date for the third installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. an official Tweeter (opens in a new tab) announced December 20, 2024 as the release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. While that date is significantly in the future, it remains to be seen if that release date will hold.
Sonic 3 movie release date
After months of speculation, we finally have a release date. According to the Sonic Movie Official Twitter (opens in a new tab)the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie hits theaters on December 20, 2024. We’ve also had Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in promo art, while confirming that all three characters will return — not that there’s any doubt.

Of course, the announcement came in August 2022, and that release date is December 2024. There’s still plenty of time before we get an official trailer, let alone see this movie in theaters. The release date could be pushed back, pushed back, or even scrapped altogether if Paramount is acquired by then and their new CEO decides to cancel Sonic 3 a la Batgirl.
But for now, let’s take this release date announcement for what it is: good news.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Cast Speculations
Remember when I said I had bad news? Well, it’s about one of the main actors in the first two films: Jim Carrey. On March 31, 2022, Go to Hollywood (opens in a new tab) (around the 4:19 mark) posted an interview with Carrey where he said he was “retiring”.
His decision appears to be final, but he also talked about it as if it was just for now, and he called it a “timeout” from acting. Carrey also said that the right script written “in gold ink” that would be “really important for people to see” would be enough for him to come back.
Why is he backing down? Well, Carrey said, “I’ve had enough. I’ve done enough. I’ve had enough.” Sounds like someone who’s lived an amazing life.
So This Could Bring Out Jim Carrey As Robotnik, As Sonic 2 Producer Neal H Moritz Said IGN (opens in a new tab) that “we wouldn’t even try” to recast the character. Fellow producer Toby Ascher said that “Jim Carrey is still a member of the Sonic family and he will always have a place in those movies and TV shows as long as he wants to be there. We love Jim and he’s so special, and what he’s doing with Robotnik is so amazing. We’d love him as long as he’d love to be there with us.
Moritz gave people reason to be optimistic about a Carrey return, saying “And I have a feeling he loves Robotnik so much that I don’t think he’ll be able to walk away from it.”
And consider this your Spoiler warning for Sonic 2 plot points!
Aside from Carrey, it looks like the entire live action and voice actor cast from Sonic 2 should return, as no one was killed in that film. This means that the following cast is still in play:
- Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog
- Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Miles “Tails” Prower, Sonic’s new best friend and sidekick
- Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic’s new friend who was introduced as an enemy ally to Dr. Robotnik.
- Donna Jay Fulks as Longclaw the brown owl who talks to Sonic from holographic recordings
- James Marsden as Green Hills Sheriff Tom Wachowski
- Tika Sumpter as local vet Maddie Wachowski, who is also Tom’s wife
- Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Maddie’s older sister
- Melody Nosipho Niemann as Jojo, Rachel’s daughter
- Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, the hapless Deputy Sheriff of Green Hills
- Shemar Moore as Rachel’s fiancé, Randall, who was also a GUN undercover agent
- Lee Majdoub as Stone, Dr. Robotnik’s assistant
- Tom Butler as GUN leader Commander Walters
There’s also the matter of Jason Griffith, who voiced one of Sonic’s rivals, Shadow the Hedgehog – who appeared in the post-credits scene of Sonic 2. Because O’Shaughnessey was brought in to voice Tails, there’s reason to suspect that Griffith will also voice Shadow. Kirk Thornton also voiced Shadow.
Sonic 3 Movie Plot Speculation
That said, it’s not hard to see what we could get in a Sonic 3 movie, especially if the movie uses the available source material for the narration.
Shadow, for those unaware, was created by Gerald Robotnik – the grandfather of the Eggman Jim Carrey played in the first two films – as part of Project Shadow (which aimed to find a way to immortality ). While Carrey’s absence seems like a big deal, it can be easily fixed, especially if you bring in someone like Jack Black to portray his grandfather in flashback scenes.
Shadow, an occasional rival to Sonic, makes perfect sense for a villain. And what would a villain be without a boyfriend? We bet Stone – if Robotnik is gone and needs a new boss – would like to work on the Robotnik legacy with Shadow.
And the appearance of this new super-duper Sonic would likely force Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to work together again to stop him.
